Blue Box is a utility application designed for encoding and decoding DTMF (Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency) and Touch Tone signals. It offers users the ability to generate tones through a simulated phone keypad interface or to decipher tones captured via the device’s microphone.

The software allows for playback of tone combinations with customizable parameters, including tone duration, delays, pauses, and volume levels. Users can select from different regional systems, such as US, UK, and European standards, to ensure compatibility with various telecommunication protocols.

Blue Box supports multi-frequency tones, which represent an earlier form of trunk control signaling, and includes additional trunk control signals like KP, ST1, ST2, ST3, KP/ST2. It also offers the playback of common telephony tones such as Dial Tone, Ring Back Tone, Busy Signal, and the 2600Hz tone. A pause feature is implemented using a comma to insert delays between tones during playback for improved timing control.

The application features a Favorites system for storing and organizing sequences for quick recall. Users can select contact numbers from their address book to display corresponding tones or to play them back directly. Additionally, it facilitates sharing encoded or decoded numbers through primary communication apps such as Phone, FaceTime, or Messages.

Blue Box includes a Red Box mode allowing it to play coin tone sequences specific to different regions, including 5¢, 10¢, and 25¢ for the US system and 10p and 50p for European systems. The software also enables creation of custom tones where users can control individual frequencies and volume levels. These custom tones may consist of various on/off pulse patterns and can be set to continuous playback if desired.

A recording feature allows users to record interactions with the encoder for precise playback with matching timing. This functionality supports all tone types encountered in telephony, including dial tones, busy signals, ring-back signals, 2600Hz tones, and coin/trunk control signals.

An integrated help manual provides comprehensive, step-by-step instructions for all features. Upon initial launch, informative pop-up messages guide users through the interface controls.

Important Notice: Blue Box is intended solely as an educational tool and utility. It should not be employed for illegal or malicious purposes. While it can assist in dialing sequences, it is not designed to manipulate digital telephony services.

Limitations include its software-based decoding approach, which is processor-intensive and may exhibit variable performance across different devices. Processing tones shorter than 100 milliseconds or with minimal pauses may be challenging; future updates and more powerful processors are expected to improve reliability. For high-speed tone decoding needs, hardware solutions are recommended.

It is important to note that Blue Box cannot emit tones into the iPhone’s calling system during active calls.

The software proves useful for entering numbers into touch-tone operated systems such as answering machine PINs or navigating through menu-driven dial-up services. Users can input numbers once and playback the recorded sequences into the phone's microphone with simple taps.
